The Jamaica Game Developer Society just released a showcase and an accompanying steam sale of Caribbean-created games called “Windies Direct” — a play on Nintendo’s indie-focused Directs.
The showcase highlights game makers from a vibrant and creative community of people in the Caribbean and its Diaspora who are making games independently — both as full-time or part-time projects, or as hobbies.
Here’s the video of Windies Direct.
Glen Henry- founder of Spritewrench Studios and Founder of the Jamaica Game Developers Society shared that it all started with a handful of friends, the internet-connected and in-person community has grown to more than 300 members from Jamaica, Trinidad, Cayman Islands and in the US Diaspora.
Fact is, there is a fast rising Caribbean eSports Culture across primarily 15 Caribbean countries, SiliconCaribe was told by Gregory More, Chairman of the Jamaica Esports Federation.
The eSports Culture has spawned a eSports Federation and led to Jamaica being the first Caribbean country to have been accepted in the International Esports Federation (IEF) because of their long history of hosting tournaments. It has not been unusual for eSports events to have 300-500 Jamaican gamers attend.
The Caribbean eSports Culture is on to something. It’s great to see that We’re not just consuming Games but we’re also creating them!
