There were always a number of micro animation studios in Jamaica – the one and two person outfits that’s been following their passion and producing animated characters and mini webisodes and posting them on Youtube. In fact it’s what predates and gave rise to the idea that an industry could form here. JAMPRO’s head of Creative industries Kim-Marie Spence said that was their first stop in getting to know who were the men and women behind the animations that had amassed a cult like following online.
It was that too I believe that could give rise to the launch of a full fledged, internationally connected studio such as Reel Rock GSW Animation studio. Reel Rock existence makes a strong business case as it plans on tapping the estimated US$100billion market. It’s founders have over 75 years combined business experience – they are Lorna Greene Wayne Sinclair and Fayval Williams. They have with them a 11 person team.
They just officially launched its studio this week and held a one day conference attended by heavy hitters such as the Joan Vogelesang,CEO of ToonBoom ( Canada) and Joel Kuwahara,Co-founder of Bento Box ( USA) who keynoted. The Jamaica Observer reported on the launch here.
