How many Jamaicans are on Facebook now? It’s like THE question to be asking and answering these past few weeks. So I decided to write a how to article that anyone can refer to and pass on to colleagues and friends. Here’s how to find out how many Jamaicans are on Facebook.
1. Login to Facebook as usual and go to the Home Page. Not your Profile Page.
2. On the Home Page, on the left hand in the side bar, from the top you will see your picture and beneath that in the first block of information you’ll see News Feed, Messages, Events, Friends etc. In the Second Block of information you will see Photos, Ads and Pages etc. Click on Ads and Pages. If you do not see Ads and Pages for some reason, don’t worry, use the Search box and type in Ads, Facebook Ads, Ads Manager.
3. Go to the Ads Page and Click on green button Create an Ad. It is placed on the top right hand side.
4. On the Create An Ad Page, you will see a page that asks you to fill out information as if you are going to create a Facebook Ad. The first section asks you to design your ad, ignore and scroll down to the second section which is Targeting. In the second slot, you will see Location. Type in Jamaica.
5. The third item is Demographics. The first slot is “Age”. This is where you can select an age range if you were seeking to really place an ad. Select Any for both age ranges. When you do this you will see a box appear to the right of your screen with the heading “Estimated Reach” of people who live in Jamaica.
7. Still under Demographics select “All” when prompted to select “Sex- Male or Female”,”Interested in” and
“Relationship”. The number that appear will give you the Estimated Reach of your Jamaican audience on Facebook, which currently stands at 363,380 people as of Sunday August 29th, 2010. This number tells you how many people who live in Jamaica and are on Facebook.

How many Jamaican teenagers are on Facebook ?
If you want to find out how many Jamaican teenagers are on Facebook. Under the Demographics section, with all the “Age Range” select age 13 to age 19, “Interested in” and “Relationship” status remaining at “All”, that figure is now 106,420. So a third of Jamaican audience on Facebook are teenagers.
How many Jamaican “lesbians” are on Facebook ?
If you want to find out how many Jamaican lesbians ( women who are interested in women) are on Facebook. Under the Demographics section on the Create an Ad Page, with all the “Age Range” and “Relationship” status remaining at “All”, Select Women, Select Women under the slot interested in – that figure is now at 7,500.
How many Jamaican “gay” men are on Facebook?
If you want to find out how many Jamaican gay men ( men who are interested in men) are on Facebook. Under the Demographics section on the Create an Ad Page, with all the “Age” Range and “Relationship” status remaining at “All”, Select Male, Select Men under the slot interested in – that figure is now at 420.
I put this last two demographic pieces of information in to yes stimulate even more debate about the accuracy of the “Interested in” category, a debate which has been raging online since Facebook Ads came in to play. Some people use it to indicate their sexual orientation and many others use it to indicate who they are interested in meeting on a business and personal level. Does clicking that you are interested in Men, Women or both indicates your sexual orientation or simply that you are interested in friends, business colleagues. What do you think?
And so you can use this method to change the demographic information to get the numbers that you seek so as to help you to target your audience accurately. It is also an excellent way to track the growth of the Jamaican audience on Facebook.
