We wrote a post on the Jamaica Gleaner last week with the headline- “Jamaica Gleaner,Caribbean’s oldest newspaper profits plummets, vows to focus on increased market share online” which became the hot post for the week. It had a just under 20 comments amongst all of that was a continuous banter between two regular bog readers that was a Gleaner vs Observer war of words of sort.
The debate raged as to which site is really number one. So we decided to dig up some stats and see what comes out of it. We used both Alexa.com(owned by Amazon.com) and Compete.com as references. Here are the results. According to Alexa.com
1. JamaicaObserver.com as a 24,350 traffic rank
Jamaica-Gleaner has a 20,359 traffic rank
2. On JamaicaObserver.com the visitor spends an average time of 6.2 mins on the site.
On Jamaica-Gleaner the visitor spends an average time of 5.3mins on the site.

Let’s move on to what Compete.com revealed when the two sites were compared. The first graphic shows their unique visitors per month and how those numbers have been trending whether up or down.
Conclusions, without question, The Jamaica-Gleaner has far more content online than the JamaicaObserver, yet the latter and younger newspaper has people staying on a little longer to read theirs. Additionally, the Jamaica Gleaner as about 40,000 more unique visitors per month than the Jamaica Observer and the trend over the last year has been that both sites have been trending up. A further look at the graphic will also give you a clue as to what search terms lead visitors to their sites, what are the top referring sites that brings them traffic as well. Interesting snapshot.
