Jamaica-Company insiders have told Silicon Caribe, that Digicel will be coming hot and heavy within the next couple months with Wimax wireless broadband and has chosen ASUS EEE PC as their laptop suppliers.Digicel was slated for a mid 2007 launch of an islandwide roll out of residential Wimax and subsidized laptops programme, as they drive to do for Internet Access what they did for mobile phones 6 years ago – making it more accessible and affordable for all Jamaicans. It was speculated by industry analysts, that Billionaire Carlos Slim’s buyout of the fledging MiPhone company for US$70miion last year, forced Digicel to change plans. However Silicon Caribe sources, said that they were instead hunting for the best laptop suppliers and wanted to get their infrastructure tight and right.WiMax for business though, has been in private beta mode here for many months. The Caribbean’s leading mobile service provider, is also buoyed also by its successful roll out in Cayman early in 2007, even as WiMax as a technology only gained approval from the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union (ITU) last October. Wimax –is a wireless broadband technology that enables a subscriber high speed Internet access while on the road. In essence you’ll be able to sit ad surf pretty much wherever you are also able to get a cell phone signal.About the ASUS EEe PC. The ASUS EEe PC is a subnotebook computer designed by ASUS and Intel. This is a multimedia laptop that comes standard with built in Ethernet, WLAN, Speakers, microphone, Intel chipset plus a Linux and Windows XP compatible operating system. It’s a tiny thing though with only 7” viewable screen and some of the models actually carry a webcam. All in all, the ASUS Eee PC likkle but tallawah (small yet powerful) as we’d say here in Jamaica.
